Primary school application deadline 2027: apply for Reception by Friday 15 January, offers Friday 16 April

The deadline to apply for a Reception place for September 2027 is Friday 15 January 2027, and councils close the form at the end of that day: Hounslow says midnight, Swindon and Southwark 11.59pm. It applies to children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023, forms opened on Tuesday 1 September 2026 in councils including Hounslow, Swindon and Coventry, and offers arrive on National Offer Day, Friday 16 April 2027.

Which children apply this year?

Children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023 are due to start Reception in September 2027. Hounslow, Leeds and Swindon all use that exact window. A nursery place does not carry over: the School Admissions Code requires a separate application for any transfer from nursery to primary school.

Both national dates come from the Admissions Code: applications must be in by 15 January to be allocated on National Offer Day, and primary offers go out on 16 April, "or the next working day where 1 March or 16 April fall on a weekend or bank holiday". In 2027 both are Fridays, so nothing moves. Opening dates and acceptance deadlines are set locally.

Put all four on the family calendar, next to the rest of the 2026–27 year. The deadline sits exactly two weeks after New Year's Day, which is why families remember it in December and forget it in January.

How many schools should I list?

All of them. The Code says parents must be allowed to express a preference for a minimum of three schools, and councils may allow more. Coventry asks for three, Leeds recommends five, and Hounslow and Southwark give you six. Fill every slot and rank them honestly. England runs an equal-preference system: an oversubscribed school ranks applicants against its published oversubscription criteria, "first preference first" arrangements are prohibited by the Code, and the council offers you the highest-ranked school with a place. Gov.uk: "Listing only one school will not increase your chances of getting a place there." It does increase the chance of being allocated a school you never chose, so include one you could realistically be offered.

What happens on National Offer Day?

On Friday 16 April 2027 the council makes one offer per child. Lambeth says online applicants "will be sent an email on 16 April 2027" and can also check the eAdmissions website; paper applicants get an outcome letter posted that day. Coventry says the result is "emailed by 5pm", and the nursery WhatsApp group will know before you do.

Then three jobs. Accept the place by your council's date, even if it is not the school you wanted. Ask about the waiting list for any school you ranked higher. And if a school refused your child you have a statutory right to appeal to an independent panel; the Code requires the admission authority to set out its reasons, the right of appeal and the process.

What if I miss 15 January?

Apply anyway, that day. Late applications are not rejected, but they are ranked behind every on-time one. Hounslow's wording: "it will be classed as late and only considered after all on-time applications have been processed." Leeds spells out its tiers: applications in by 12 February 2027 are treated as on time by most Leeds schools, those in by 28 February get lower priority, and from 1 March you will not receive an offer until May. Other councils draw the lines differently, so find yours. Once the school year has started it becomes an in-year application, made through your council.

Summer-born children and deferring

In the Code a summer-born child is one born from 1 April to 31 August. In this round that is children born 1 April to 31 August 2023, who would start Reception in the September after their fourth birthday — for the late-August ones, days after it. Three options, all beginning with applying by 15 January.

• Start full-time in September 2027. Code paragraph 2.17: a child offered a place is entitled to a full-time place in the September following their fourth birthday.
• Start later in the year, or part-time. Parents can defer admission until later in the school year, but not beyond compulsory school age and not beyond the beginning of that year's final term; or the child can attend part-time until they reach compulsory school age. Gov.uk: "You can ask for a later start when you apply."
• Wait a year and ask for Reception in September 2028. Parents of a summer-born child may choose not to send them to school until the September following their fifth birthday, and may request admission to Reception rather than Year 1. The DfE's advice is to apply as normal and submit the request to the school's admission authority at the same time, in the autumn following the child's third birthday — for a summer-born 2023 baby, this autumn. The authority must decide in the child's best interests, set out its reasons, and need not agree.

Compulsory school age is 31 December, 31 March or 31 August following the fifth birthday, whichever comes first, so a summer-born 2023 child reaches it on 31 August 2028.
