Secondary school application deadline 2026: Saturday 31 October, missing it, and National Offer Day 2027

The deadline to apply for a secondary school place for September 2027 is Saturday 31 October 2026, the national closing date for every council in England. Applications opened on Tuesday 1 September 2026 in most areas; offers arrive on National Offer Day, Monday 1 March 2027. Two catches: your council sets the closing time, and the date is a Saturday, at the end of half term.

When exactly does the application close?

The School Admissions Code fixes 31 October as the national closing date for secondary applications. What it does not fix is the hour. Each council sets its own closing time: Warwickshire says "the deadline for applications is 4.00pm on 31 October 2026", while Gloucestershire runs to midnight. Surrey gives the date only. If your council's page names no time, assume the earlier one.

This is the round for children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016. You apply through the council you live in, even if every school on your list is in a neighbouring area. The Code says parents "are able to express a preference for at least three schools"; many councils allow more. Rank them honestly: you get one offer, at your highest preference where a place is available.

What if the deadline falls on a Saturday?

It does this year, and the next-working-day rule does not move it. The Code applies that wording to offer day only — 1 March or 16 April, "or the next working day where 1 March or 16 April fall on a weekend or bank holiday" — as happened this year, when 1 March fell on a Sunday and secondary offers went out on Monday 2 March 2026. Nothing does the same for the closing date: it stays Saturday 31 October 2026, and the council pages above say so without qualification.

October half term 2026 is Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October for 16 of the 19 English councils we track; Nottinghamshire and Surrey take Monday 19 to Friday 30 October, and Norfolk Friday 23 to Friday 30 October. All end the break on Friday 30 October, so the deadline is the Saturday at the end of half term (see the 2026-27 term dates). Submit in mid-October, once test results and open evenings are done.

What happens if I miss it?

You can still apply, but you join a different queue. The Code defines a late application as one made before the first day of term but too late "to enable the local authority to offer a place on National Offer Day". Warwickshire is blunt: late applications "won't be processed until after 1 March 2027", there were "over 500 late applicants" last year, and "if you apply late, you are much less likely to be offered a place at one of your preferred schools". Gloucestershire says a late or missing application means "a place at the nearest school to your home address that has space available".

The council must still find your child a school: if it cannot offer one of your preferences, the Code says "it must, if there are places available, offer a place at another school". Apply today, then ring admissions.

Grammar school results and the deadline

The Code requires admission authorities to take "all reasonable steps to inform parents of the outcome of selection tests before the closing date for secondary applications on 31 October", while making clear that this "does not equate to a guarantee of a selective place". Buckinghamshire tests its own primary pupils in school on Tuesday 8 and Thursday 10 September 2026 and emails most results after 4pm on Friday 9 October 2026; a standardised score of at least 121 makes a child eligible to be considered for a grammar place. Kent County Council's page gives Thursday 15 October 2026 for Kent Test results; we could not load it to confirm, so check it.

Draft two preference lists in September, one with the grammar school and one without, so the result changes one line, not the whole plan.

National Offer Day: Monday 1 March 2027

Councils send secondary offers on 1 March, which in 2027 is a Monday. Many councils release offers online in the evening: Waltham Forest's go out "on 1 March 2027 after 5pm". In the Department for Education's official statistics for September 2026 entry, published in June 2026, 83.6% of secondary applicants in England were offered their first-choice school and 95.0% one of their top three preferences.

Accepting, waiting lists and appeals

Accept the offer you are given, then pursue a waiting list or an appeal from a position of safety. Each council sets its own acceptance deadline; Waltham Forest's is Monday 15 March 2027. Declining with nothing else confirmed leaves your child without a school.

• Waiting lists. Ask the school or council to add your child; gov.uk confirms you can do this even if they have been offered a place at another school. The Code requires a list "until at least 31 December of each school year of admission", re-ranked by the published oversubscription criteria each time a child is added — no priority for the date you joined.
• Appeals. You get at least 20 school days from the decision letter to appeal; appeals are heard within 40 school days of the appeal deadline and the decision usually follows within five. You can appeal once against each rejection, and where a panel upholds an appeal the school must admit the child.
