When do schools break up for Christmas 2026? Dates by council, and when they go back in January 2027

Schools break up for Christmas on Friday 18 December 2026 in all 19 of the English councils we track, and 17 of them go back on Monday 4 January 2027. Barnet and Norfolk return a day later, on Tuesday 5 January. Wales matches England except Powys, which runs to Tuesday 22 December, and Edinburgh's pupils return on Wednesday 6 January. Independent schools are the outliers: of the 968 with a published Christmas break, 511 finish a week earlier, on Friday 11 December. When does the autumn term end in 2026?

Friday 18 December 2026, in every one of the 19 English councils in our term-dates dataset. Councils set these dates for community and voluntary controlled schools; academies, free, foundation and voluntary aided schools set their own, as Essex and Wandsworth both say, though most land on the same Friday. The council calendar does not give you the finish time: many schools go home at lunchtime on the last day, and that lands in a late-November newsletter.

When do schools go back in January 2027?

Monday 4 January 2027 for 17 of the 19 councils; Tuesday 5 January for Barnet and Norfolk. New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027, a bank holiday, so the Monday is the first working day of the year and a popular training day. In the independent-school calendars we read, Monday 4 January 2027 is the single most common inset date, chosen by 312 of the 522 schools that publish theirs. In state schools too, "back Monday 4 January" often means pupils return on the Tuesday. Our inset days guide explains how to find yours.

Barnet is the one to double-check: we record Tuesday 5 January 2027, but the council's own page and calendar PDF both returned a bot wall for us, so trust your school's page.

For a Friday 18 December to Monday 4 January break, the childcare arithmetic is 10 weekdays, three of them bank holidays (Friday 25 December, Monday 28 December as the Boxing Day substitute, and Friday 1 January), which leaves seven working days to cover, plus any inset day.

Why do private schools break up earlier?

Because they teach fewer days and take them off in longer blocks. Across the 940 independent schools with complete 2026–27 calendars in our data, the median is 169 taught weekdays against about 190 in the state system (days, not hours: many run longer days or Saturday school, which we did not measure). Christmas is where the difference shows. Of 968 independent schools with a published Christmas break, 511 (53%) finish on Friday 11 December 2026, a week before the council date. The most common return is Tuesday 5 January 2027 (452 schools, 47%), then Wednesday 6 January (226) and Monday 4 January (153). The median independent Christmas holiday across those 968 schools is 16 weekdays, against about 10 in a state school. Methodology is on our press page.

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

• Wales: the approved 2026–27 term dates end the autumn term on Friday 18 December 2026 in every council except Powys, which runs to Tuesday 22 December. All 22 authorities return on Monday 4 January 2027.
• Scotland: there is no national calendar; each council sets its own. Edinburgh's last day is Friday 18 December 2026, the winter holiday runs Monday 21 December to Tuesday 5 January, and pupils return on Wednesday 6 January 2027. Scotland also keeps a 2 January bank holiday, taken on Monday 4 January in 2027 because 2 January falls on a Saturday.
• Northern Ireland: dates are set school by school, and the Education Authority's holiday list would not load for us, so we have not printed a date. Check your school's website.

The last fortnight: nativities, jumper day, parties

The fortnight before 18 December is where the dated events pile up. Christmas Jumper Day is Thursday 10 December 2026, according to Save the Children, whose page adds that "if another day works better for you, go for it", so a fair number of schools will move it. Expect the nativity or carol concert (often a weekday afternoon, with tickets), a Christmas dinner day, a class party with non-uniform, teacher presents, and the early finish. Most of it arrives in one letter in late November. Put every line in the calendar the day it lands, with the covering parent against each, and add January's inset day while you are there.
