Why do private schools have longer holidays than state schools? The 2026–27 numbers

Published 3 September 2026 · by Adam, Fred's founder

Private schools have longer holidays because no law fixes the length of their year: state schools in England must open for 380 half-day sessions, or 190 days, and independent schools sit outside that rule — so in 2026–27 the 940 independent schools whose complete calendars we read taught a median of 169 weekdays against the state's roughly 190. The missing weeks are a fortnight off in October, a Christmas break starting Friday 11 December 2026 for most of them, and a summer term finished by Friday 9 July 2027.

TL;DR: State schools in England teach about 190 days a year by law. Independent schools have no statutory minimum and taught a median 169 weekdays in 2026–27, across the 940 schools whose complete calendars we read. The gap lands in October (median 10 weekdays off against the state's five), December (511 of 968 schools, 53%, finish on Friday 11 December 2026, against Friday 18 December for all 19 councils we track) and July (86% of 951 schools finish by Friday 9 July 2027).

How many days a year do private schools actually teach?

A median 169 weekdays in 2026–27. Of 1,408 independent schools in England checked in August 2026, 1,045 had published a 2026–27 calendar and 940 were complete enough to count taught days; half of those teach between 164 and 173 days. The state figure is about 190: the School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document sets a year of 195 days, "of which 190 days must be days on which the teacher may be required to teach pupils", the other five being the inset days. The difference is about 21 weekdays — four school weeks — not the "around 190 days" most websites quote for both sectors.

Is there a legal minimum for independent schools?

No. The rule that fixes the state year is regulation 3 of the Education (School Day and School Year) (England) Regulations 1999: "At least 380 sessions shall be held at a school during any school year", with every day divided into two sessions. Regulation 2 defines a "school", for those regulations, as "a school maintained by a local education authority, or a special school not maintained by a local education authority" — independent schools are neither. IAPS, the Independent Association of Prep Schools, puts it from the other side in its FAQs: "There are no legal requirements for school hours in independent schools."

Academies are a halfway case: gov.uk says they "can set their own term times". Councils vary too. Surrey and Nottinghamshire both take a fortnight in October 2026 and run to Wednesday 28 July 2027 instead.

Where do the extra weeks go?

88% of the 974 independent schools with an identifiable autumn half term take more than the state week, and 97% of those longer breaks cover the state week entirely. We have not measured Easter.

St Paul's Girls' School is typical: it publishes a 2026–27 year from Friday 4 September 2026 to Thursday 8 July 2027, with half term from Monday 19 to Friday 30 October and an autumn term ending on Wednesday 16 December.

The folk explanations, and what the data can and cannot say

  • "They do longer days and Saturday school, so it evens out." Perhaps, but nobody has measured it, us included: our count is of days, not hours.
  • "It's for the boarders, who need to get home." Boarders are a minority. The Independent Schools Council's census of January 2025 counted 63,035 boarders among 545,640 pupils at 1,423 UK member schools — 11.6%. Our figures do not split day schools from boarding schools.
  • "It's tradition." Nobody publishes an origin for the pattern, and we are not going to invent one. What is documented is narrower: the 1999 regulations have never applied to independent schools.

What it means for a household with a child in each system

Independent schools taught 560,300 pupils in England, 6.3% of the school population, at the January 2026 census. Four moments do most of the damage:

  • Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2026. The independent child is probably off (57% of 974 schools start their break that week); 16 of the 19 councils are in school all week.
  • Monday 14 to Friday 18 December 2026. 511 of 968 independent schools finish on Friday 11 December; all 19 councils run to Friday 18 December.
  • Monday 4 January 2027. Seventeen of the 19 councils go back; the most common independent return is Tuesday 5 January.
  • Monday 12 to Friday 23 July 2027. 86% of the 951 independent schools with a published summer term have finished by Friday 9 July; council schools run to 21, 22, 23 or 28 July.

Put both calendars in one place in September and book cover for the mismatched weeks first. Then read the full 2026–27 year for the pinch points both systems share.

Methodology

Term dates as published on each school's own website, collected in August 2026: 1,408 schools checked, 1,045 with a 2026–27 calendar, 940 complete enough to count taught days. Taught days are the weekdays inside each school's published terms minus every closure it publishes inside them — half terms, exeats and any bank holiday it lists — with no inset days and no national bank-holiday calendar deducted on top, so the comparison is conservative: independent schools' own staff days would widen the gap, not close it. Christmas and half-term figures use the break each school labels as such, or the gap between its published terms where it labels none. Council calendars are the 19 English authorities on our term-dates pages, retrieved on 8 August 2026; nine are provisional — not confirmed against the council's own published calendar — and given as published. Headline figures are on our press page.

Frequently asked

How many school days are there in a year at a private school?

In 2026–27 the median independent school in England teaches 169 weekdays, based on the 940 schools whose complete calendars we read, against about 190 in state schools. Half of those independent schools teach between 164 and 173 days, so the school's own term-dates page is the figure that matters for your family.

Do private schools have to open for a minimum number of days?

No. The 380-session rule in the Education (School Day and School Year) (England) Regulations 1999 applies only to schools maintained by a local education authority and to special schools not maintained by one, and IAPS says there are no legal requirements for school hours in independent schools. Each independent school sets its own calendar.

Do private schools have a two-week October half term?

Most do. In our 2026–27 data the median independent October half term is 10 weekdays against the state five, 88% of the 974 schools with an identifiable autumn half term take more than the state week, and 57% of them start in the week of Monday 19 October 2026, a week before the state week beginning Monday 26 October.

When do private schools break up for Christmas 2026?

Of 968 independent schools with a published Christmas break, 511 (53%) finish on Friday 11 December 2026, a week before the Friday 18 December date shared by all 19 English councils we track. The most common return is Tuesday 5 January 2027 (452 schools, 47%), a day after most council schools go back on Monday 4 January.

Do longer school days make up for the longer private school holidays?

Nobody has measured it, us included: our figure counts days, not hours. Many independent schools run a longer day or Saturday school, but there is no legal requirement on school hours in independent schools either, so the only way to know is to compare your school's timetable with the local state one.

Do academies have the same holidays as council schools?

Not necessarily. Gov.uk says academies can set their own term times, and while many keep to the council calendar, the school's own term-dates page is the one to trust.

Two calendars, one household

The gap only bites when nobody is holding both calendars at once. Fred holds both. Forward the school email, snap the letter that came home in the book bag, or send a voice note on the walk back from the gate, and Fred puts the dates on the family calendar, then reminds the right parent early enough to book cover for the weeks the two schools do not share. Fred lives in WhatsApp, so there is no app to install, and the first month is free with no card needed to start.
